How to Get Cited by ChatGPT (and Rank in Its Answers)
ChatGPT cites a website when it searches the web to answer a question and your page is one of the clearest sources it finds. You cannot buy that spot, but you can stop blocking it and make your pages easy to quote.
How ChatGPT chooses what to cite
ChatGPT answers from two sources. The first is what the model learned in training, which has no links. The second is a live web search: when a question needs current or specific information, ChatGPT searches, reads a handful of pages and writes an answer with links to them. Those links are the citations, and they are what send visitors to your site.
Three OpenAI programs touch your site, and only one of them decides whether you can appear in search answers:
| Bot | What OpenAI uses it for | Does it affect citations? |
|---|---|---|
| OAI-SearchBot | Surfaces websites in ChatGPT's search features | Yes. Block it and your pages cannot be shown in ChatGPT search answers. |
| ChatGPT-User | Opens a page when a user asks ChatGPT about it | No. OpenAI says it "is not used to determine whether content may appear in Search". |
| GPTBot | Collects content that may be used to train OpenAI's models | No. It only decides whether your content is used for training. |

8 steps to get cited by ChatGPT
1. Allow OAI-SearchBot in robots.txt
OpenAI's guidance for publishers is direct: to appear in ChatGPT search summaries and snippets, make sure you are not blocking OAI-SearchBot. Add this to robots.txt if you want to be explicit:
User-agent: OAI-SearchBot
Allow: /
You can still keep your content out of training by disallowing GPTBot. The two settings are independent. OpenAI says changes take about 24 hours to apply.
2. Check that nothing else blocks it
robots.txt can say "allowed" while a firewall, a bot-protection service or a security plugin refuses the request. That block is silent: your site works for people, and ChatGPT simply never sees it. Test the page the way OAI-SearchBot requests it with the free AI visibility checker, which reports "blocked by robots.txt" and "blocked by firewall" separately.
3. Make the page indexable and readable as plain HTML
A page marked noindex will not be shown in ChatGPT search; OpenAI points publishers to that meta tag to opt pages out. Check that your important pages do not carry it by accident. Then make sure the text is in the HTML the server sends, not added later by JavaScript, because a crawler that does not run scripts sees only what the server sent.
4. Put the answer first
ChatGPT quotes short passages. Pages that win citations usually have a heading phrased like the question and a one or two sentence answer right below it, followed by the detail. If your page about "best CRM for a 3-person team" takes four paragraphs to reach a recommendation, a competitor's page that names one in the first line is easier to quote.
5. Give it facts it can repeat
Answers are built from specifics: what the product costs, what it supports, how it compares, what changed this year. Publish them in text (not only in images or PDFs), keep them current, and show the date the page was last updated.
6. Be mentioned on other sites
For "which tool is best" questions, ChatGPT often cites comparison articles, review sites, directories and forum threads rather than the vendors themselves. Being listed and described accurately on those pages is part of getting cited. Look at the sources ChatGPT links for your main questions today, then check whether you appear on them and whether the facts there are right.
7. Describe your pages with structured data
JSON-LD markup (schema.org) for your organization, products, articles and FAQs tells search systems exactly what a page is about and which facts are which. It is not a guarantee of anything, but it removes guesswork about your prices, names and dates.
8. Track citations and visits
ChatGPT adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to the links in its answers, so visits it sends show up in your analytics under that source. In your server logs, OAI-SearchBot visits show which pages it has read, and ChatGPT-User visits show pages people asked ChatGPT about. If OAI-SearchBot has never fetched a page, it cannot cite it yet.
Can you rank first in ChatGPT?
There is no fixed ranking to climb. The same question can produce different sources from one day to the next, and answers change with how the question is phrased. What you can control is whether you are eligible (steps 1 to 3) and whether your page is the clearest, most specific source for the question (steps 4 to 7). Measure progress by the visits and crawler activity in step 8, over weeks.
The same rules work for the other assistants
Claude uses Claude-SearchBot, Perplexity uses PerplexityBot, Copilot builds on Bing and Google AI Overviews use Googlebot. The checklist is the same: let their search crawlers in, serve readable HTML and answer the question plainly. The LLM SEO guide covers all of them, and the AI crawlers list has the exact robots.txt names.
